Briar and Olive wood.

My homeland is rich with various materials related to pipe making. As with morta, we harvest Briar and olives wood by ourselves, process and prepare it for production in a traditional way, drying for at least three years.  In the coastal part of Croatia, Primorje and Dalmatia, briar trees are very common. On these locations exist excellent conditions for the formation of burl, the spherical part of the root from which pipes are made. This requires rocky terrain and a very strong wind, which are common on the islands. Croatia has more than 1000 islands, (exactly 1246 😉 ) and one of the most beautiful coasts.

Briar was harvested in great quantity until before World War II, and exported all over the world.

With the communists on power, that form of business disappeared.

Today, only a few of us – enthusiasts, harvest briar and process it. Unlike other areas of the Mediterranean, where briar has practically disappeared, it is all harvested, and finding suitable pieces be very hard, because the tree needs 20-60 years to form a new burl, in the Croatian coast the stocks of first-class briar are still very large.

In terms of quality, Adriatic briar is superior, naturally reddish in color, beautiful in texture and hardness.

Olive wood Pipes

Olive wood is very nice looking. They have very special coloring and grain, and carving pipes is the very same way as using briar. But, it is not neutral wood like briar and morta. Reason is simple. Olive wood did not pass through the process, to make stabilization, like briar, which are boiled for 24 hours, or morta which rinses in water for thousands of years.  It is just simple, dry wood, full of resins and oils. The first few times smoking gives some very special, sweet aroma, which will disappear after some period.  In any case, Olive wood pipes are very nice looking, and can last, in most cases, for decades.

From time to time, I made Olive pipes. Like all other materials, which I use in my pipe making process, It was harvested 12-15 years ago, by my business partner Darko. The Adriatic coast is full with quality olive wood, and briar. It was a big old tree, approximately 200 – 250 years old… Well, not very seldom for Olive trees. Final results are special.
